Third Week of Easter
Reading: Acts 8:1-8
Gospel: John 6:35-40
Jesus said to the crowds, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe.Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

The Jews held something more than the secret to longevity. They had Jesus, the Bread of Life for all eternity. Yet him they rejected and defied. In their faithlessness they perished and died. We too enjoy the same opportunity. At our Eucharistic tables ordinary bread turns into Christ’s body. By taking communion at Mass we get access to eternity.
Bread may still look like bread so we won’t notice anything strange. But beyond appearances there happens a great substantial change. Bread turns into the Body of Christ our Lord. Oh, what a privilege, what marvels to behold! Those who eat this Bread obtain deliverance from earthly strife. It is the will of the Father “that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life” (John 6:35-40).
The Eucharistic bread is not acceptable to some. Well, they can have it their way because God respects human freedom. Meanwhile God suffers in silence seeing their souls descending into the deep. Would that they repent! God will embrace them like a shepherd finding his lost sheep.
The hypocrite attends Mass just in case he gets something really worthy. This is the wager’s mentality, a great scandal to those who are serious in spirituality. But hypocrites cannot keep their cake and eat it too. Because they are neither hot nor cold God will vomit them (Rev. 3:15), yes it is true!
Others are neither hypocrite nor unbelieving but are merely procrastinating. They plan to accept this Bread when they are no longer “alive and kicking”. But having been lukewarm towards God while still healthy, would they have the inner strength to fight the devil when they are dying already? While God accepts the repentant even at his last moment of strife, time may not be on the evil person’s side to rise from the rubbles of a bad life. – (Atty.) Rev. Fr.
