5th Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: 1 Kings 10:1-10
Gospel: Mark 7:14-23

Jesus called the people to him again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can make that person unclean. It is what comes out from within

that makes unclean. Let everyone who has ears listen.”

When Jesus got home and was away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about this saying and he replied, “So even you are dull? Do you not see that whatever comes from outside cannot make a person unclean? Since it enters, not the heart but the stomach and is finally passed out.”

Thus Jesus declared that all foods are clean.

And he went on, “What comes out of a person is what defiles, for evil designs come out of the heart: theft, murder, adultery, jealousy, greed, maliciousness, deceit, indecency, slander, pride and folly. All these evil things come from within and make a person unclean.”

D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)

While driving the car broke down and Mea had to walk home for a romantic birthday dinner she’d share with her husband. But while walking she could not refuse the smell of boiled camote from a sidewalk vendor. “I am going to shed off the gases by walking, anyway” she thought, “so I don’t think it’s bad to have a bite or two.”

Arriving home, she found her husband smiling at the gate. “I’m gonna put a blindfold on you because I have a pleasant surprise for you” the husband announced. When the husband had led Mea to the dining table, he motioned to remove the blindfold from Mea. But the phone rang and he had to go to the sala to take the call. By this time Mea could feel the effect of camote in her stomach. She felt she had to let off all the gases she had accumulated. She shifted her weight a little bit to the left and let out some putrid air she alone could smell for her husband was in the sala. Then she shifted to the right and released a louder one. By the time her husband returned, she felt very comfortable.

The husband who knew nothing of the little “bombardments” delicately removed the blindfold from her wife’s eyes. Before she could adjust her eyes to the bright dining room light, guests in the sala sang in jubilant chorus: “Happy birthday to you”. The relatives of her husband had been there all the while.

She felt so embarrassed. But one of the guests broke the ice by quoting a verse from today’s Gospel reading: “Nothing that enters one from outside can make that person unclean”. He was of course referring to the camote that entered Mea’s mouth. The mother-in-law retorted: The Gospel also says that what comes out of a person is what defiles. We know what she was referring to!– (Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr.,
