1st Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading:
1 Sam 3: 1-10
Gospel: Mark 1:29-39
As soon as Jesus and his disciples left the synagogue, Jesus went to the home of Simon and Andrew with James and John. As Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever, they immediately told him about her. Jesus went to her and taking her by the hand, raised her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
That evening at sundown, people brought to Jesus all the sick and those who had evil spirits: the whole town was pressing around the door. Jesus healed many who had various diseases, and drove out many demons; but he did not let them speak, for they knew who he was.
Very early in the morning, before daylight, Jesus went off to a lonely place where he prayed. Simon and the others went out, too, searching for him; and when they found him they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Let’s go to the nearby villages so that I may preach there too; for that is why I came.”

Why did Jesus silence the devil who was willing to confess his divinity in public? It could be that Jesus didn’t want to fuel the people’s expectation of a political liberator. Jesus wanted people to seek him out for spiritual reasons. What are our reasons for seeking Jesus out? Let’s play this alphabet, just for a change! Announcers seek Jesus out as the good news. Bakers as the bread of life; Carpenters, as the house built on rock; Defense lawyers as the truth; Engineers as the strong foundation; Friends as the meek and humble of heart; Gardeners as the living water; Hypertensive people as prince of peace; Indigents as compassionate to the poor; Judges as the truth; Kings as someone who knows our inmost thoughts; Leaders as source of wisdom; Married people as foundation of love; Nurses as fountain of life; Optometrists as source of light.
Pilots seek Jesus out as the eagle’s wings; Queens as the glory that lasts; Runners as the finish line; Sailors as authority to command the winds and the waves; Travelers as the way. The Unemployed look for Jesus for He is in need of workers in the vineyard. Veterinarians seek him out for he is concerned about the welfare of the sheep. Writers look for him not for the letter that kills but for the spirit that gives life. The Xenophobic persons come to him so that in all their actuations they may take this as their motto: “Gentile or Jew, woman or man, no more”. Young people look for Jesus because Jesus loves “little children”. Zealous people lean on Jesus as source of strength. Whatever your reasons, make sure these lead you to salvation. – (Atty.) Rev. Fr.
