Our Divine Helper

May 24, 2017 Wednesday, 6th Week of Easter1st Reading: Acts 17:15, 22–18:1
Gospel: Jn 16:12–15

Jesus said to his disciples, “I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. When he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into the whole truth.

“He has nothing to say of himself but he will speak of what he hears, and he will tell you of the things to come. He will take what is mine and make it known to you; in doing this, he will glorify me. All that the Father has is mine; because of this I have just told you, that the Spirit will take what is mine and make it known to you.”

After getting the pope’s entire luggage loaded into the limo, the driver says, “Excuse me, Your Holiness, would you please take your seat so we can leave?” “Well, to tell you the truth,” says the Pope, “they never let me drive at the Vatican, and I’d really like to drive today.”

Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Supreme Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 km/ph. Then they hear sirens.  The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. “I need to talk to the Chief,” he says to the dispatcher. The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he’s stopped a limo going a hundred and five.

“So bust him,” said the Chief. “I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really important,” said the cop. The Chief then asked, “Who ya got there, the Mayor?” Cop: “Bigger.” Chief: “Governor?” Cop: “Bigger.”

“Well,” said the Chief, “Who is it?” Cop: “I think it’s God!” Chief: “What makes you think it’s God?” Cop: “He’s got the Pope for a limo driver!” (From the internet).

The social standing of the helper suggests the social category of the master. In today’s Gospel reading Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as our Helper. He will comfort us when we are hurting (John 14:18-27), will help us recall the things we have learned from Jesus (John 14:26), will counsel us in our daily lives (John 16:8), and will help us stop sinning (Romans 8:26). He could have sent as many angels as are available. But he sent no less than the third person of the Trinity. What does this fact say about our status before God?  With the Psalmist we exclaim: “What is man that you care for him, mortal man that you should keep him in mind? Yet you have made him little less than a God, with glory and honor you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hand…” (Psalm 8). – (Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM
