Before Epiphany
1st Reading: 1 Jn 5:14-21
Gospel: John 2:1-11
There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus was also invited to the wedding with his disciples. When all the wine provided for the celebration had been served and they had run out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” Jesus replied, “Woman, your thoughts are not mine! My hour has not yet come.”
However his mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Nearby were six stone water jars meant for the ritual washing as practiced by the Jews; each jar could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them to the brim. Then Jesus said, “Now draw some out and take it to the steward.” So they did.
The steward tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing from where it had come; for only the servants who had drawn the water knew. So, he called the bridegroom to tell him, “Everyone serves the best wine first and when people have drunk enough, he serves that which is ordinary. Instead you have kept the best wine until the end.”
This miraculous sign was the first, and Jesus performed it at Cana in Galilee. In this way he let his Glory appear and his disciples believed in him.

Women can take motherly love to unimaginable proportions. Just think about the extraordinary sacrifices your mother has done for you through the years. Haven’t you heard of mothers praying that the Lord would spare their ailing babies of pain and that they’d get instead the sickness the baby is suffering? Not counting the sacrifices mothers do in secret, all their loving acts taken together outdo children’s negative experiences with their weaknesses.
Thus far is how an earthly mother can give of themselves with the limited capacities they have. Imagine how far they’d go if given extraordinary powers. Today’s Gospel reading is about Mary, the mother of humanity, and how far she went out of her way to assist people in need. The family celebrating the wedding was not even aware of the forthcoming embarrassment of running out of wine for guests. Mary’s sensitivity took care of everything. How much more she’d go out of her way to help us now that she is enjoying extraordinary power in heaven? Jesus himself confirmed and affirmed this extraordinary power of intercession when he gave in to her request at Cana.
With her respect for our freedom, however, she can only shed tears at the spiritual needs of those who refuse to accept her as mother.—(Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., D.M.
