First Reading:
Is 29:17-24
Gospel Reading:
Mt 9:27-31
As Jesus moved on from Capernaum, two blind men followed him, shouting, “Son of David, help us!” When he was about to enter the house, the blind men caught up with him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do what you want?” They answered, “Yes, sir!”Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “As you have believed, so let it be.” And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus gave them a stern warning, “Be careful and let no one know about this.” But as soon as they went away, they spread the news about him through the whole area.

(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)
A blind man walks into a shop with his dog. He picks his dog up and starts swinging it around. When the shopkeeper asks what he is doing the blind man replies “just looking around!” (From the internet).
Did the two blind men in today’s Gospel story have a dog for a guide as they followed Jesus? Probably they didn’t have one. The Jews had little tolerance for this animal in Biblical times. The two blind men followed Jesus up to his house in Capernaum, perhaps, bumping into many other people who also followed Jesus. They did not mind the danger and the hassle of walking in the midst of an impatient crowd because they firmly believed Jesus had the power to heal them. Jesus asked them: “Do you believe that I am able to do what you want?” Their answer was a resounding “Yes”. At this Jesus told them: “As you have believed, so let it be.” And their eyes were opened.
We too have been following Jesus since the day of baptism. We were still babies, though, when we were baptized but the Christian community stood for us in the persons of parents and sponsors. Compared to the two blind men we are better off not only with a community backing us up but also with the gift of physical sight to see good works and be inspired by them. Yet many are half-hearted. If not for the fear of the “loss of heaven and the pains of hell” they wouldn’t have kept an eye on Jesus. It is really for the sake of convenience. As they keep an eye on Jesus in case heaven exists, they tail behind the devil enjoying every minute of his company.
Others may not be tailing behind the devil. But they keep making diversions is if life isn’t short. One encounter was enough for the blind men to make them instant evangelizers. The Gospel tells us, “But as soon as they went away, they spread the news about him through the whole area”. The real blind ones are those who throw precious spiritual opportunities to the dogs. -(Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM., MAPM., MMExM., REB., Email: dan.delosangeles@gmail.com.
