The yeast of the Pharisees

1st Reading: Eph 1:11–14
Gospel: Luke 12:1-7

Such a numerous crowd had gathered that they crushed one another. Then Jesus spoke to his disciples in this way,“Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known. Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places, will be proclaimed from the housetops.“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who put to death the body and after that can do no more. But I will tell you whom to fear: Fear the One who after killing you is able to throw you into hell. This one you must fear. Don’t you get five sparrows for two pennies? Yet not one of them has been forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head have been numbered. So do not fear: are you not worth more than a flock of sparrows?”

D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)
A story is told of a childless king who was scouting for a successor to the throne. He assembled ten of the finest young men in his kingdom and gave them a seed each to grow in a year’s time. After one year, nine except one named Daryl returned with a healthy plant-in-a-pot each. Despite Daryl’s determination to make the seed grow, nothing sprouted the whole year through. He came before the presence of the king with an empty pot. He got the shock of his life when the king raised his hand and proclaimed him his successor. What the king had distributed to the ten aspirants were boiled seeds. Only Daryl was real, the rest were ambitious hypocrites. He wanted to spare his kingdom from a hypocrite ruler.

Jesus too wanted to spare his people from hypocrite religious leaders. He warned the people, saying, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy”. “Yeast” and “hypocrisy” are power words. As yeast increases the size of dough without increasing its quantity, so hypocrisy makes someone appear big without substance.

Hypocrites bloat in their self-proclaimed greatness. They bounce around spending life in pursuit of power to pump more air to their ego. But they are in for an eventual explosion that would expose their nothingness. Meanwhile they spend life without direction, stability and substance. What kind of stewards will they be of God’s kingdom on earth? They are like those aspirants who stood before the king offering pots with impressive sprouts. Under the soil the king could not find the genuine seed he was expecting to find. As the king dismissed them, so will God banish from his kingdom all hypocrites. – (Atty.) Rev. Fr.
