“2010 was a year that changed us all. As a nation, we decided to call a spade a spade.

As citizens, we needed to act together. As individuals, we asked ourselves if we still had a conscience. “The 2010 presidential election was arguably the single most important event of the decade, and I think a lot of people would agree.

Some have even gone as far as saying that 2010 was the next 1986. That may be a bit too much but I could see the connection between these two “big events”. “Sadly though for most of us, what happens after life-altering ‘big events’…is another story.

It’s just like watching a poorly-written action movie. We tend to doze off in between the epic scenes, but almost cry with the entire audience in amazement during action shots. “Similarly, we love to attend big rallies on the streets or participate online to express our views, but we just sit around doing literally nothing in between to avoid these from happening in the first place.

It’s like we have an on-off switch for patriotism. We feel great about ourselves being at EDSA once in a while, but then wait for things to merit another EDSA. “I can cite many other examples of how we tend to petiks petiks in between ‘big events’ but I think it would be better to focus on the part of the glass that’s half full.

“Personally, I have always believed that what I do in between big decisions is as important as the decisions themselves. Otherwise, I would not have made those decisions at all. Likewise, as a public figure, I have learned that what I do in between elections is as important as participating in the election itself.

“For instance, my most current ‘in between’ has been the most fulfilling one. It has been a great honor and privilege to have served as Commissioner-at-Large of the National Youth Commission (NYC). I consider the work that we have done, especially on the Committees on Environment and Education, to be one of the most rewarding tasks as a public servant. A job done with much passion.

“NYC: you have been my family in public service and for that, I thank you for standing by me and the Commission. Your overwhelming support made my journey as a public servant exciting, a lot easier, and more meaningful.

“As you dedicate a part of yourselves to the successful fruition of our programs and activities, you have also shown me that there is so much zeal and patriotism within the government, regardless of how it is perceived to be outside.

“On this note, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the people within the Office of the President. To serve at the pleasure of the President, alongside professionals for the development of the youth sector, has made this experience extra special.

“For its part, our administration was far from perfect, no administration truly is. But let it be said that I will always be proud to have been part of an administration that introduced formidable reform and systemic change.

“And precisely because of this change, I’m afraid that there is an important call that I need to respond to: one that unfortunately cannot be carried out while holding an appointive position in government. As I was challenged to help out in 2010, once again my hands will be on deck for a similar but uniquely fulfilling mission.

“It is for this very reason that I have personally conveyed to the President my resignation from the National Youth Commission as its Commissioner-at-Large. “On May 9, I join the appeal of 54.6 Million voters to protect the future of this country by supporting the candidacy of leaders whom we think deserve to be at the forefront of development (in this elections or the next).

“I may just be a drop in the ocean that is the 2016 Philippine elections but in my humble perception of the situation, coupled with my deep recognition of whatever He throws my way, this is how I choose to contribute to the next ‘big event’.

“I will start today by declaring my support for the candidacy of Leni Robredo as the next Vice-President of the Republic of the Philippines. This is my new ‘in between'”.
