Pinanatili ng Armed Forces of the Philippines ang mga tropa nito sa ilalim ng “heightened alert” at nagpakalat ng mga sundalo para tulungan ang pulisya na pigilan ang mga terror attack gaya ng mga nangyari sa Brussels, Belgium.
“We have dedicated forces as support to the Philippine National Police who are maintaining visibility in public areas… There are certain areas where you will see military visibility,” sabi ni AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla sa isang pulong-balitaan kahapon.
Maaaring makakita ng ilang kawal na kasama ang mga pulis sa transportation hubs at matataong lugar, lalo na ngayong Semana Santa, aniya.
Tumanggi si Padilla na sabihin kung ilang sundalo ang idineploy at inihanda.
Sinabi niya lang na ito’y bahagi ng “necessary steps” na ginawa ng AFP para mapigilan ang mga pambobomba gaya ng sa Brussels, kung saan mahigit 30 katao ang nasawi at ilan pa ang nasugatan.
Naganap ang mga pambobomba, na pinaniniwalaang pakana ng Islamic militants, sa paliparan at sa loob ng isang underground train ng Brussels nitong Martes (oras ng Pilipinas).
Sa hiwalay na pulong-balitaan, sinabi ng PNP na nagpakalat ito ng 64,635 pulis sa mga matataong lugar, transportation hubs, mga madalas daanang ruta, at “soft targets.”
“We are constantly monitoring the situation on the ground to ensure that similar incidents will not happen here. Our intensified security and intelligence gathering efforts are ongoing to monitor threat groups and deter any terror attempt,” ani Padilla.
Inamin ng military official na mas mahirap magpatupad ng anti-terror measures kapag bumibiyahe ang maraming tao gaya ng nangyayari tuwing Semana Santa, kumpara sa mga normal na araw.
Samantala, inihayag ni Padilla na pinanatili ang AFP sa heightened alert, isang bagong status na bahagyang mataas kaysa ikalawang-pinakamataas na blue alert pero mas mabababa pa rin sa red alert.
“We see no need for that (red alert) yet, but to maintain the heightened alert conditions that we already have,” aniya.
Itinaas ang heightened alert Lunes, nang pormal na simulan ng militar at iba pang ahensiyang pangseguridad ang paghahanda para sa taunang pagbiyahe ng maraming tao mula Metro Manila patungo sa mga lalawigan para sa Semana Santa.
