Spreading the Word

Fr. Dan De Los Angeles - January 26, 2016 - 07:16 PM

January 26, 2016 Tuesday, 3rd Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: 2 Tm 1: 1-8 or Ti 1: 1-5
Gospel:Mark3:31-35

Jesus’ mother and brothers came. As they stood outside, they sent someone to call him. The crowd sitting around Jesus told him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you.” He replied,

“Who are my mother and my brothers?”

And looking around at those who sat there he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.”

Noise is the technical term for distraction in the communication theory of Marshall McLuhan. Because he views noise as destructive to message transmission, McLuhan urges communicators to give as much attention to noise as to the other elements of the communication process. As evangelizers we cannot be outdone in noise re-engineering.

Distractions are like thieves that come when we are least prepared. The best way to arm ourselves as evangelizers is to prepare our talk through the following, the acronym of which is “prepare”, to wit: prayer, regurgitation, experience, paneling, analysis, and research. Paneling is a good tool for priests.

They can form a panel of parishioners to assist them in the preparation of their homilies.

Regurgitation is for all evangelizers. By meditating on the Word they can get the most of the message for themselves and for their listeners.

When the evangelizer is prepared, he can put up a good fight against distractions using tested techniques. One technique is incorporation used by Jesus in today’s Gospel. Someone interrupted his talk by shouting, “Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you.” He was just pointing out that if his exorcisms were directed against Beelzebul he could not be an agent of Beelzebul. The contrary would mean that Satan’s household is disunited and bound to disintegrate (Mark 30:22-30).

Instead of ignoring the man, Jesus integrated the distraction into the fiber of his message by using it as segue to unity with God, not with the devil. He pointed out that Mary’s greatness was not in her status as his mother but as his partner. For just as at the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed “Not my will but your will be done”, Mary said at the garden of Annunciation, “Be it done unto me according to your word”.

Look how the otherwise destructive noise became a powerful preaching tool. But why bother about effective speech when a good life can preach with more persuasion? We must bother about the matter.

For while words without actions are empty, actions without words are heavy. We must not only live what we preach but preach what we live.— Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM. Email: [email protected]. Website: www.frdan.org.
