SOMETHING has to give when defending Juniors Division titlist Saint Jude Catholic School and Makati Gospel Church-New Life Christian Academy collide today, January 21, in the 3rd Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association high school basketball competitions at the Uno High School Gym in Tondo, Manila.

Both teams own an unblemished 2-0 record. The winner of the game will join equally unbeaten Philippine Cultural College atop the Juniors team standings. The loser, on the other hand, will drop into a share of second place with Pace Academy.

Host Philippine Cultural College temporarily grabbed the No. 1 spot in the PCYAA Juniors team standings with a hard-earned 58-55 victory over Uno High School last Sunday.

PCC snared its third win in as many assignments while Uno, the inaugural titlist in 2013-14, slipped to 1-2 and fell into a tie with Grace Christian College at fifth place.

The Seagulls never trailed throughout the game and were ahead by as much as 10 points, 22-12, late in the first half. However, it could not put away the highly-spirited Uneans, who came within one point, 56-55, with 26.6 seconds left.

Uno failed to capitalize on PCC’s 0-for-4 performance from the free throw line in the final seconds. Both times, PCC grabbed offensive rebounds following the second-shot misses before Kimson Chen sealed the game for the 3-0 Seagulls on a pair of charities with 0.6 seconds remaining.

Chen led PCC with 12 points, 16 rebounds and four steals and tree-like Daniel Manalang contributed nine points and 11 boards.

Jozshua Healy and Jesse Chong netted 18 and 16 points, respectively for Uno.

In other Sunday games, Sebastian Choi scored 24 points and John Ing added 20 as Grace Christian College picked up its first victory in three outings with a 70-64 decision over winless Jubilee Christian Academy (0-3) and Pace Academy, behind Jaden Ng’s 19 points, improved its ledger to 2-1 with an 83-39 rout of undermanned Saint Peter the Apostle School (0-3).

In the inaugural Ladies High School volleyball competitions last Sunday, Grace Christian College beat Pace Academy, 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 27-25), and Philippine Cultural College won twice in sweeping Saint Peter the Apostle School, 3-0 (28-26, 25-15, 25-13), and taking down Grace Christian College in four sets (27-29, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18).

Saint Jude Catholic School, which beat SPAS, 3-0, on opening day, drew a bye in the five-school event.
