BINITAY na ang Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) na nasa death row sa Saudi Arabia noong Disyembre 29, ayon sa Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Sa isang pahayag, kinumpirma ng DFA ang pagkakabitay kay Joselito Lidasan Zapanta na nakakulong sa simula pa noong Abril 13, 2010 dahil sa kasong murder with robbery.
Kinasuhan si Zapanta matapos namang mapatay ang kanyang landlord na si Imam Ibrahim, isang Sudanese national, matapos magtalo sa upa.
Binitay si Zapanta matapos tumanggi ang pamilya ng kanyang napatay na pirmahan ang Affidavit of Forgiveness (Tanazul) kapalit ng blood money.
Humihingi ang pamilya ng biktima ng P48 milyon, ngunit umabot lamang sa P23 milyon ang nalikom ng kampo ni Zapanta.
“We offer our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones for their loss,” sabi ni DFA spokesman, Assistant Secretary Charles Jose.
Naiwan ni Zapanta ang kanyang tatay, nanay, kapatid at dalawang anak.
“The Philippine Government has undertaken and exhausted all diplomatic and legal efforts, and extended consular and legal assistance to preserve the life of Mr. Zapanta. The Philippine Government provided the late Mr. Zapanta all necessary assistance and ensured that his legal rights were observed throughout the whole judicial process,” dagdag ni Jose.
Tiniyak ni Jose na patuloy naman na magbibigay ang DFA ng tulong sa pamilya ni Zapanta.
“We appeal to all our nationals overseas to follow the local laws of their host countries at all times and to avoid involvement in criminal activities,” sabi ni Jose.
