1st Reading: Rv 11:4-12
Gospel: Lk 20:27–40

Some Sadducees arrived. These people claim that there is noresurrection and they asked Jesus this question, “Master, in theScripture Moses told us: ‘If anyone dies leaving a wife but nochildren, his brother must take the wife, and the child to be bornwill be regarded as the child of the deceased man.’ Now, there wereseven brothers; the first married a wife, but he died withoutchildren; and the second and the third took the wife; in fact allseven died leaving no children. Last of all the woman died.

On the dayof the resurrection, to which of them will the woman be wife? For theseven had her as wife.”And Jesus replied, “Taking husband or wife is proper to people ofthis world, but for those who are considered worthy of the world tocome and of resurrection from the dead, there is no more marriage.Besides, they cannot die for they are like the angels. They too aresons and daughters of God because they are born of the resurrection. “Yes, the dead will be raised, and even Moses implied it in thepassage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God ofAbraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. For he is God of theliving and not of the dead, and for him all are alive.”

(Daily Gospel in the
Assimilated Life
Experience)

“Taking husband or wife is proper only to people of this world” (Luke 20:27-40). The reason is because in eternity all exclusive relationships end. In witness of this, priests do not marry at all. By their celibacy they proclaim that there is life after death. As God’s witnesses celibacy pertains to the core of the priests’ spirituality.

On the other hand, the time of married couples to belong to each other is ticking. They only have this lifetime to be husband and wife to each other. After our resurrection from the dead, all exclusive relationships, including marriage, will cease because God will be the center of our love, the object of our desire and the pivotal point of our eternal existence. The glaring implication is that since marriage happens only in this world, couples should perform the marital obligations well because in heaven marriage will be no more. After a husband heard a homily on this matter he told his wife: “Sa langit wala ka na dear, that’s why I do my best to love you here”.

With marriage well performed by couples and celibacy faithfully observed by priests, we become joyous witnesses to the fact that life does not end here. There is a resurrection awaiting all. – Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM. Email:[email protected]. Website:www.frdan.org.
