17th Week
in Ordinary Time

1st Reading:
Jer 15: 10, 16-21
Gospel: Matthew 13:44-46

Jesus sent the crowds away and went into the house. And his disciples came to him saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He answered them, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the people of the Kingdom; the weeds are those who follow the evil one. The enemy who sows them is the devil; the harvest is the end of time and the workers are the angels.

Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom all that is scandalous and all who do evil. And these will be thrown in the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the just will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear.”

D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)

Husband reports to wife that their son stole money from his wallet. In defense of the son the mother says: “How are you sure it wasn’t I who took the money?” The husband replies: “I’m sure you couldn’t have stolen it.” “What makes you so sure?” the wife inquires. The husband explains: “Because the thief did not empty my wallet.”

Some couples have learned to put up with one another because they really have no choice. They are like wheat and weeds growing together. This takes us to the heart of today’s Gospel message. Sometimes we just have to be patient with our own kind.
But today’s Gospel invites us to go beyond mere mutual tolerance. God wants us to be active in addressing the question of evil in the world. He wants good people to sharpen their faith by rubbing themselves along the rough edges of life. When life has become so rough because of evil people, such is the opportune time to sharpen one’s faith. Hopefully good examples pierce the hearts of evil people and convert them with the help of God’s grace. We can be wounded in the process, but in the end “God makes all things new”.
But a caveat is in order: God takes his time. The battered among us ask when will evil actions ultimately redound to the good of the victims who patiently suffer? It can take as long the lifetime of bad people abusing their freedom. God has great respect for human freedom. Few people understand this and even accuse God of favoritism for respecting the freedom of those who care less about the freedom of others. But if God were to adopt this kind of reasoning and proceed to weed out bad people from society, would anyone be spared? — Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM. Email: [email protected].
