Feast of the Annunciation

Fr. Dan De Los Angeles - April 09, 2018 - 12:22 AM

Annunciation of the Lord 1st Reading: Is 7:10–14; 8:10 2nd Reading: Heb 10:4–10 Gospel: Lk 1:26–38
The angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you.” Mary was troubled at these words, wondering what this greeting could mean. But the angel said, “Do not fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus.” He will be great and shall rightly be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob forever and his reign shall have no end.”Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be if I am a virgin?” And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the holy child to be born shall be called Son of God. Even your relative Elizabeth is expecting a son in her old age, although she was unable to have a child, and she is now in her sixth month. With God nothing is impossible.”Then Mary said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said.” And the angel left her.

On March 15, 2007, the Vatican proclaimed erroneous two books of Jesuit priest Jon Sobrino, a proponent of liberation theology. The two books are entitled Jesus the Liberator, and Christ the Liberator (1999). Found contrary to the teachings of the Church were Sobrino’s writings on the divinity of Jesus, his incarnation, his relationship with the kingdom of God, his self-consciousness, and the salvific value of his death.
The Church understands the concerns of Sobrino for people suffering in poverty because the Church has also espoused preferential option for the poor. But this does not warrant the shifting of the balance between Jesus’ divine nature and human nature. Sobrino has shifted the balance towards Jesus’ humanity. Reflecting on Sobrino’s errors, Vatican spokesman Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said that a proper understanding of the role of Christ as ‘pontiff’ (bridge) between God and man would save one from error regarding his divinity and humanity. “To be mediator and bridge,” he explained, “Jesus Christ must lean firmly both on the side of humanity as well as that of divinity. Otherwise, the passing from one side to the other is interrupted or is insecure.”
Today’s feast of the Annunciation firmly establishes these two sides. In the message that the angel brought to the Blessed Virgin, Jesus’ divinity was affirmed. In Mary’s positive response to that message, Jesus’ humanity was confirmed. —(Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., D.M.
