CAGAYAN de Oro City — Magmimistulang huling
tryout ng Gilas Pilipinas’ 12-man Southeast Asian Basketball Association lineup ang pagsagupa nito sa Mindanao All-Star squad sa pagbubukas ng PBA All-Star Week ngayon dito sa Xavier University Gym.
Ang Gilas Pilipinas ay pangungunahan ni three-time reigning PBA Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo na sinasabing sigurado nang magkakaroon ng puwesto sa pambansang koponan na lalaban sa SEABA men’s championship.
Mahalaga para sa Pilipinas na mapagharian ang SEABA dahil nakataya dito ang puwesto para sa Fiba Asian Championship na isang qualifying event naman para sa Fiba World Cup.
“This is the last full practice that we will have because after the All-Stars, it will be (SEABA) week already,” sabi ni Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes kahapon sa pagdating ng koponan sa Cagayan de Oro City.
“After this week, we’ll have the Final 12, and we already have some names in mind. But again, we’re going to use Wednesday and Friday as the final test to figure out who will make that lineup.”
Ang format ng PBA All-Star Week sa taong ito ay kakaiba. Dinisenyo ito para sanayin ang Gilas training pool at bilang tryout na rin para sa mga nais mapabilang sa pambansang koponan.
Pagkatapos ng sagupaang ito ay makakalaban naman ng Gilas pool ang Luzon All-Stars sa Lucena City sa Biernes kung kailan inaasahang ihahayag ni Reyes ang final roster ng koponan.
Ang final roster na iyon ang lalaban sa Visayas All-Stars sa Cebu City sa darating na Linggo.
Ang Mindanao squad ay pamumunuan nina Moala Tautuaa, Troy Rosario, Sonny Thoss, Scottie Thompson at Jio Jalalon.
“This is not just an All-Star Game, its our way of helping Gilas,” sabi ni Thompson, ang kamador ng Barangay Ginebra.
“We’re here to give them a good fight for their preparation (for the SEABA). It’s a big deal for us being help them in their preparations.”
Kasama ni Fajardo na lalaro para sa Gilas Pilipinas ngayon sina Terrence Romeo, LA Revilla, Mike Tolomia, RR Pogoy, Matthew Wright, Kevin Ferrer, Carl Cruz, Al Gotladera at Bradwyn Guinto.
Kasama namang lalaro para sa Mindanao team sina Cyrus Baguio, Marc Barroca, PJ Simon, Rafi Reavis at Baser Amer.
Ang coach ng Mindanao All-Stars ay si Chito Victolero ng Star.
