Pinag-iingat ng EcoWaste Coalition ang publiko sa mga cup at mugs na ipinanregalo sa Valentines day dahil ilan sa mga ito ay ginamitan ng lead.
“Love-struck Pinoys should steer clear of gifts that are laden with chemicals that can harm human health,” ani Thony Dizon, ng EcoWaste. “Leaded glazes and paints on love-themed cups and mugs are of particular concern because of their availability not only on Valentine’s Day but almost all-year-round.”
Ang lead ay nakahalo umano sa pintura at pampagandang ginamit sa mga baso. Maaari umanong mahalo ang lead sa inumin na delikado kung maiinom.
Nakaaapekto ang lead sa normal na paglaki ng utak at central nervous system.
Bagamat maaaring hindi kaagad makita ang epekto sa kalusugan, sinabi ng World Health Organization na walang ligtas na lebel ng lead.
Sa 23 baso na sinuri ng EcoWaste 22 ang mayroong lead na mula 1,028 hanggang 31,900 parts per million ang lebel. Sa mga decorative paints ang pinapayagan ay 90 ppm.
Ang nag-iisa naman na walang lead ay mayroon namang 2,147 ppm ng cadmium, isang kemikal na pinaniniwalaang nakakakanser.
