IT’S a red-letter day for my baby Michael Pangilinan today because he is turning 20 – right now! Ha-hahaha! How time flies talaga. Parang kailan lang when he was barely 16 years old nang ipakilala ang batang ito sa akin sa Zirkoh Tomas Morato.

A common friend named Carlo Bacsa introduced Michael to me that night sa Zirkoh (no, it wasn’t Nov. 26 when I first met him) at gusto raw nitong maging singer.

He delightfully sang “Dance With My Father” that brought Gladys to tears – para mapaiyak mo ang isang komedyana like Gladys, it’s big deal for us. Nataon kasing na-miss ni Gladys ang daddy niya who passed away a month before that kaya siya naiyak.

Galing kasi nang pagkakanta ni Michael who was patpatin pa that time kaya pati kami were moved with his rendition. As days passed, we found out that Michael’s birthday pala is Nov. 26 – a very important day rin sa buhay namin because it’s our mom’s (the late Gloria Agabao) death anniversary.

Since then, I promised myself to own him up like my own son.

More than four years ago kami nagsimula ni Michael bilang mag-ina sa showbiz. Unti-unti naming binuo ang kanyang singing career, he worked so hard para ma-hone ang kaniyang talent in singing and performing and thank God, kahit paano ay meron namang pinatutu-nguhan ang kaniyang pagtitiyaga.

Tulad ng ibang mag-ta-lent-manager, we also go through some rough times – bata pa kasi si Michael kaya marami siyang natutunang adjustments along the way. I would mount a concert for him every three months in the last four years ng kaniyang career.

Sinadya kong lagyan ng malalaking guests ang bawat show niya para masanay siya to work with big-named artists para ma-challenge siya. In fairness to this boy, he’s very cooperative naman though pasayaw at times. Ganoon talaga, bata kasi eh.

Kaila-ngang tiyagain mo lang. After all, this boy is very lovable and appreciative sa lahat ng mga nagawa namin sa kaniya. Until, X Factor came about where he landed in the Top 20. Then, I produced his first-ever self-titled album na pina-release ko sa Star Records (Star Music na ngayon).

After mag-hit ang carrier single niya – ang “Kung Sakali” originally sang by Pabs Dadivas, ay dumating sa buhay namin ang Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs 2014 where Michael was made to interpret the very controversial gay-themed song “Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako” composed by our dear friend Joven Tan.
Masasabi kong this song made Michael, ang laki ng impact ng song na ito sa karera niya. Kaya he became the LGBT’s darling. He is the male ambassador or the LGBT community actually. That’s on record ha.

Finally Michael got good breaks every now and then. Siya ang pinakanta ng theme song ng dating teleserye ng ABS-CBN na Bridges of Love and recently he sang “It Might Be You” na theme song naman ng Star Cinema’s hit movie “Everyday I Love You” starring Gerald Anderson, Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano.

Michael turns 20 today. It’s a roller-coaster ride actually – a different kind of journey to stardom.

As of now, with all humility, he’s still struggling, konting sundot pa at masasbai nating pa-mainstream na si Michael. He’s got what it takes to be a music superstar actually.  Even his colleagues in the business has so much belief in his talent.

Walang party si Michael today, walang bonggang celebration. Maybe a simple dinner with his family, ganoon lang. Umaga na kasi umuwi iyan this morning kasi nga meron kaming work last night. Bukas naman ay meron kaming work ulit and the next days to come.

Kaya walang chance na makapaghanda, maybe next week.  Basta ang major celebration ni Michael ay gaganapin natin sa Dec. 18 as we mount his forthcoming concert entitled “Michael Sounds Familiar” at the Music Museum with his ka-birthday Randy Santiago as his very special guest alongside the beautiful Gabrielle Concepcion, Sexbomb Aira and Sexbomb Louise and #Hashtag boy Nikko Seagal Natividad, under the musical direction of Ivan Lee Espinosa.

“Sobrang saya ko. Parang kailan lang nang magsimula ako, four years na pala iyon. Titiyagain ko ito hanggang sa matupad ko ang pangarap ko.  “Basta happy ang buong family ko masaya rin ako. Kaya maraming salamat kay Lord at binayayaan niya ako ng maliit na talento at masayang buhay.

Cliche man sa iba pero from the bottom of my heart, kung wala kayo wala ako rito,” ani Michael.
Happy, happy birthday to you, our baby.
